ATLAS (CEGA: Canadian Energy Geoscience Association), Calgary, AB
BGIS Course, Internship, Project 2023

OBJECTIVES

Expand and update the Geological Atlas of the Western Canada sedimentary basin.

Projects involve manipulating, translating, and transforming data from a paid source (ESRI) to open-source applications (QGIS), utilizing various geospatial analyses, generating detailed reports, and presenting final results.

The Cookbook provides a comprehensive description of the project, explaining how to access geological data from the Atlas and create maps using map functions like buffering, smoothing, and clipping.

The cookbook offers guidelines, workflows, and screenshots, serving as a useful reference for completing dialogue boxes for different analyses and map functions, such as structure maps and isopach maps.

DUTIES
- Geospatial analysis techniques, maintenance, and management of the projects, preparing reports, and presenting final results.
- Manipulation, translation and transformation of the project
- Editing, updating, designing, and sharing maps
- QGIS and Microsoft Office 365 suite
- Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving
- Individual player and multitasking with the priority of work

Grocery Store Site Selection in Calgary, AB
BGIS Course, SAIT Academic, First Sememster Project, 2022

OBJECTIVES
This project is aimed at determining the ideal location for a new grocery store in Calgary. To achieve this project, the following objectives will accurately guide our team toward answering the geographic question; "Where is the ideal location for a new grocery store in Calgary”. The objectives include:

PROJECT SCOPE
For the design and analysis, the GIS data model suited for the ideal location of a grocery store is proposed to include the following data layers:
• Calgary city boundaries layer
• Pre-existing grocery stores in Calgary (Geo-coding)
• Demography layer (population, income, address)
• Calgary transportation network layer
• Land Use zones
• LRT Stations
• Parcel Addresses

CONCLUSION
This project utilized GIS technology, analysis techniques, spatial and attribute data, and other method to locate ideal areas for a new Grocery store in Calgary. From the analysis, four locations were selected to be most ideal for locating a new grocery store.
GIS is used in business to make judgments based not only on the attributes of business entities, but also on their spatial properties: location, overlaps, proximities, zones of influence, scale, distances which leads to better-informed decisions (Carr T., 2003).
Utilizing the knowledge acquired from the first semester (May till date), and our own personal research and study, we can proudly say that the selected sites are technically correct and spatially located. Looking at the population increase from 2019 to 2021, there is need for expansion of businesses like grocery store in calgary.
